The acronym SPCC stands for \u201csteel plate carbon commercial.\u201d SPPC is considered a Japanese JIS standard.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what does cold-rolled carbon steel mean exactly?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, how strong is cold-rolled carbon steel and what are its benefits?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Infusion of Carbon&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Carbon steel is steel that has been infused with carbon to increase the steel\u2019s strength and hardness. The higher the percentage of carbon, the stronger the steel and the more the steel can withstand impacts. However, carbon is susceptible to corrosion which is why Flexpipe\u2019s cold-rolled steel is galvanized and further protected with a layer\/coating of Polyethylene (PE).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strength-Increasing Processes&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kloecknermetals.com\/blog\/the-4-types-of-heat-treatment-steel-undergoes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Heat treatment processes<\/a> are used in multiple industrial applications to increase the strength of steel. Typical processes include annealing, hardening, tempering\/quenching, and normalizing. Heating the steel above its recrystallization temperature \u2013 or its recrystallization phase \u2013 changes the microstructure of the steel. This changes the steel\u2019s grain size, its uniformity, and its distribution until the microstructure realigns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By controlling the rate of cooling after heat treatment, companies can dramatically improve the mechanical properties of steel while increasing its strength, durability, and hardness. Hot-rolled steel is steel that has gone through a heat treatment process. It is essentially heated as it is being compressed through large industrial rollers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cold-rolled steel is simply hot-rolled steel that goes through an additional strength-hardening process. However, this time the steel is compressed by large rollers at room temperature. This additional strength-increasing step means cold-rolled steel is <strong>20 percent stronger<\/strong> than hot-rolled steel and can withstand higher stress loads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flexpipe\u2019s steel tubes are made from cold-rolled steel \u2013 which is <\/strong><strong>20 %<\/strong><strong> stronger than hot-rolled steel.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mechanical Properties and Benefits&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Cold-rolled carbon Q235 Steel is a durable material known for its strength, its ability to handle high-stress (loads), and its excellent weldability. Cold-rolled carbon steel is used in large-scale residential and commercial construction and infrastructure projects. It is a high-strength steel that\u2019s used in the railway industry, for the construction of bridges and commercial buildings and is a critical material for industrial pipes and fittings.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-container\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Instron Compression Tests<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Again, the most important aspect of any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flexpipeinc.com\/us_en\/structures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Flexpipe structure<\/a> is to ensure you\u2019ve properly accounted for the loading capacity. You must know the weight a given length and thickness of pipe can support before plastic deformation \u2013 which is essentially the point at which the weight exceeds the steel\u2019s yield strength.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1285\" src=\"https:\/\/www.flexpipeinc.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/heavy_duty_rack.gif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49018\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the weight surpasses the steel\u2019s yield strength, distortion will be present in the form of buckling, bending, or twisting. This distortion is permanent. The shorter the length of the pipe, the more weight it can support \u2013 as outlined in the image above. Since Flexpipe customers cut different lengths based on different structural requirements, the compression testing needed to be done on multiple lengths of steel pipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flexpipe did exactly that. The tests were done on steel pipe thicknesses of 0.7 MM, 1MM, and 2MM in varying lengths.
