Supporting manufacturing innovation through engineering universities

Supporting manufacturing innovation through engineering universities

Innovation and continuous improvement are essential pillars of modern manufacturing, and Flexpipe is proud to support university engineering programs. A perfect example of this fruitful collaboration is the recent project carried out by the robotics department at the University of Memphis.

A robotized gravity flow rack project

The robotics department at the University of Memphis undertook an ambitious project using the Flexpipe tube and connector joint system and 80/20 aluminum extrusions to design a gravity rack. Their aim: to create a gravity rack structure that is robust, efficient and compliant with lean manufacturing principles. This rack will serve as a demonstration and will be integrated into a supply chain where a robot, equipped with a radio frequency identification (RFID) system, will load and unload boxes.

Using RFID for efficient management

At the heart of this project is the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system. Thanks to this technology, the robot can determine the destination of each box with greater precision and speed, optimizing workflow and reducing errors. This intelligent inventory management system not only saves time, but also improves product traceability.

En Marge 12-17 is a non-profit organization in Montreal, dedicated to providing a safe shelter and support for young people aged 12 to 17 in runaway situations and in transition to adulthood. More than just a shelter, En Marge 12-17 is a healthy living environment for these young people. They offer a variety of services, including emergency and short-term accommodation, providing an alternative to running away and living on the streets. Their mission is to welcome and house runaways, while supporting those around them.

A Sturdy and Attractive Furniture

As part of our commitment to supporting social causes, we had the opportunity to collaborate with Architecture Sans Frontières Québec to refurbish the furniture in five bedrooms and the living room at En Marge 12-17. The aim of this project was to create a safe, caring and welcoming environment for the young people taken in by the Montreal-based organization.

Sturdy, made-to-measure bunk bed designed by Architecture Sans Frontières Québec, and assembled by Flexpipe with the help of cabinetmaker Marc-Antoine Goyette.

One of the main challenges of this project was to design furniture that was solid, safe and sober, while avoiding colors such as red and black, which can evoke an emotional impact relating to danger, excitement and violence. Young people in precarious situations need a place where they can feel safe and confident. This is where the Flexpipe modular system comes into its own. Flexpipe's sturdiness and ability to be adapted to specific needs made it the perfect choice for this project.

The challenge of making the rooms more attractive and functional was met! (before/after)

Together, we designed and installed single and bunk beds, wardrobe storage, bookcases and TV stands, creating a functional and welcoming space for young people. This initiative reflects our commitment to using our expertise to support community initiatives and improve the quality of life of the young people housed by the organization.

This project with En Marge 12-17 and Architecture Sans Frontières Québec is a perfect example of how thoughtful collaboration and the right materials can transform living spaces, bringing safety and comfort to those who need it most. Thanks also to the collaborators who helped make this project a success, namely Erick Desmarais (building mechanic) and Andrew Woodside (painter).

A New Multi-Purpose Room for Atelier Majuscule

A New Multi-Purpose Room for Atelier Majuscule

We're pleased to share an inspiring project that came to fruition thanks to the collaboration between Flexpipe, Atelier Majuscule, and Architecture Sans Frontières Québec. This project highlights the importance of social reintegration through innovative community initiatives.

Much More Than Printing Services

Atelier Majuscule, formerly known as Imprime-Emploi, is a non-profit organization founded in 1996. The company's mission is to promote the socio-professional integration of people experiencing certain difficulties, by offering paid on-the-job training to enable them to acquire the skills they need to enter the job market and stay employed. Thanks to this mission, Atelier Majuscule provides high-quality printing services, while offering its employees a chance to reintegrate into society.

Redevelopment Project

The project involved refurbishing the multifunctional and computer room for employees in training at Atelier Majuscule. The main challenge was to reuse as much of the existing furniture as possible, giving it a new lease of life. This is where Flexpipe comes in, with its modular tube and connector joint solutions. These materials were used to create new high tables and benches, bringing renewed functionality and aesthetics to the space.

A Collaborative Achievement

Assembly of the new structures was carried out by ASFQ's project manager, assisted by a small team of dedicated volunteers and an experienced carpenter. This collaboration created a more welcoming and functional work environment for employees in training, reinforcing Atelier Majuscule's social mission.

$ 3,140 DONATED TO THE CAB THANKS TO CHARITY MARKET

$ 3,140 DONATED TO THE CAB THANKS TO CHARITY MARKET

Flexpipe is proud to announce the success of its charity market in support of the CAB Farnham. The event raised $3,140 to support many essential programs and services offered to the community.

ENCOURAGING REGIONAL CIRCULAR ECONOMY

Every year, Flexpipe organizes a family BBQ for its employees and their immediate families. Why not take the opportunity to support a local organization that supports community self-help through a charity market. Donations of household goods, mostly provided by company employees and a few community members, helped fuel the sale of second-hand items and foster the region’s circular economy.

The voluntary sale ran from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and many visitors took advantage of the family activities on offer: inflatable games for young and old, BBQ, cotton candy and second-hand shopping. The Centre de réussite éducative pour enfants La-le-li graciously provided colorful face painting, creating a festive and convivial atmosphere.

SUPPORT LOCAL COMMUNITY

The mission of the Centre d'Action Bénévole of Farnham is to promote volunteerism and meet the needs of citizens through a variety of programs. The funds raised through this charity market will enable us to continue offering valuable support to seniors, individuals with disabilities, families in difficulty and all vulnerable people. The Farnham CAB serves over 200 families in a territory that includes Farnham, Sainte-Brigide-d’Iberville, Sainte-Sabine and Ange-Gardien.

Jean Valiquette, General Manager of the Farnham CAB, emphasized the importance of this initiative:

“The current socio-economic context is rather difficult and affects the entire population, including people in vulnerable situations and those on low incomes. The rising costs of food and basic necessities continue to rise, while disposable income is not keeping pace. For the CAB, this represents a 30% increase in demand, but a 40% decrease in what we’re able to fetch.“

Flexpipe would like to extend its warmest thanks to all the employees and citizens who contributed to the success of this event through their donations and active participation.

Working Together Towards Inclusive Excellence

Working Together Towards Inclusive Excellence

Flexpipe's growing order backlog forced it to look for a reliable partner to assemble 70 flowracks. The natural choice was Groupe AFFI, an NPO dedicated to the employment and professional development of people with functional limitations.

In an ever-changing business world, where strategic collaborations can be the key to success, Flexpipe and Groupe AFFI recently joined forces for a promising collaboration. In addition to respecting the values of continuous improvement and social inclusion, this collaboration demonstrated the versatility of the Groupe AFFI and proved that performance knows no bounds!

Faced with growing demand and an expanding order book, Flexpipe sought a reliable partner to meet its production needs. Continuous improvement is an integral part of who we are and what we do. We focus on a safe and healthy work environment, skills development, and innovation. Our mission of social involvement is collaborative and inclusive, to establish a dynamic and growing collective network. We naturally chose the Groupe AFFI, a subcontractor who shares our values.

At Flexpipe, continuous improvement is not limited to product or service quality. It also extends to the company's ethics, its social impact, and its ability to collaborate with other organizations sharing similar values. Flexpipe has always believed in a dynamic and inclusive economy, where collaboration is synonymous with ambition.

Groupe AFFI: An inclusive vision

Groupe AFFI stands out as a Non-Profit Organization (NPO) dedicated to the employment and professional development of people with functional limitations. Its mission is built around values such as human respect, excellence, flexibility, and self-improvement. Groupe AFFI offers subcontracting services by hiring staff with functional limitations, where diversified services are provided reliably and efficiently for small and large mandates. The promise of performance goes hand in hand with social commitment. With a dedicated team of 650 members, the majority of whom have functional limitations, Groupe AFFI is positioned as a key player in the food, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and consumer retail sectors.

Training and human development

One of Groupe AFFI's strengths lies in its commitment to ongoing employee training. From French to mathematics, social skills to finance, a variety of training courses are offered, enabling employees to develop their skills and realize their full potential.

When excellence rhymes with innovation and adaptability

The mandate entrusted to Groupe AFFI was an ambitious one: to assemble over 70 flowracks in just 3 weeks. Thanks to a dedicated team and a methodical approach, Groupe AFFI not only met the challenge, but also exceeded expectations, completing the mandate in just 2 weeks.

Groupe AFFI demonstrated its expertise and commitment to excellence. They demonstrated remarkable adaptability, creating ingenious templates to ensure quality and conformity between the assembled flowracks. It took just 2 or 3 days to increase the production rate and assemble 18 racks a day instead of 10.

"Since many employees don't have the skills to read a tape measure, these templates are used to ensure that the distance between connector joints is always the same from one rack to the next."
Explains Kateryna, Supervisor at Groupe AFFI.

By considering the limitations of certain employees, tailor-made solutions were developed, illustrating the spirit of innovation and inclusion that characterizes Groupe AFFI.

Flexpipe provided detailed drawings, a model flowrack and all pre-cut and identified parts to facilitate the task, which was greatly appreciated by the supervisors at Groupe AFFI. They then analyzed and deconstructed each assembly step as a separate task on several assembly line stations. Each assembly station was then clearly color-coded, making it easier to assemble each part of the rack.

"Teamwork takes on its full meaning, it's as if our products were theirs!"
Affirms Benjamin Ricard, General Manager at Flexpipe.

The supervisors were very attentive to the employees and their limitations, showing respect and flexibility. Unlike the projects they are used to doing, the one proposed by Flexpipe was quite diversified and included a physical task portion. All agreed that it was an enjoyable and different project to do!

Flexpipe plants 5 trees to compensate its employees' carbon footprint

Flexpipe plants 5 trees to compensate its employees' carbon footprint

During the week of September 18 to 22, Flexpipe employees joined forces to promote carpooling and mobile travel while reducing their carbon footprint. The impressive results of this initiative led to the planting of 5 trees, symbolizing their commitment to the environment.

534 kilometers saved
During the week of the challenge, the company's employees managed to accumulate a remarkable saving of 534 kilometers in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This activity was made possible thanks to the commitment of employees, who chose to carpool and prefer active transport such as cycling or walking to get to work. Their determination demonstrated that simple actions can have a significant positive impact on the environment.

A concrete measure to compensate the environmental impact of their journey
Flexpipe has committed to planting the number of trees equivalent to the CO2 generated by participating employees who were unable to carpool or commute during the period in question. This means that 0.726 tonnes of CO2 will be offset by the planting of 5 trees on company premises. The employees have requested that these trees be fruit trees, so that they can enjoy the fruits of their efforts year after year.

A symbol for the Farnham community
The planting of the 5 fruit trees symbolizes another step towards a greener, more sustainable future, not only for the company, but also for the Farnham community. It's an example of how collective action on behalf of the environment can make a significant difference.

Flexpipe is proud to support this initiative and to recognize its employees' efforts to reduce their carbon footprint. This initiative demonstrates the importance of commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility within the company.

A Mobile Work Bench for an Engineering Student Competition

A Mobile Work Bench for an Engineering Student Competition

Teams from Michigan Tech University (MTU) and Université Laval took part in the Shell Eco Marathon in Indianapolis, a competition highlighting innovation and energy efficiency. Flexpipe was honored to support both teams by supplying essential components for their mobile workbenches.

Assembling the mobile work bench

Both teams found assembly of the Flexpipe mobile workbenches relatively straightforward, thanks to the careful planning and modularity of the components. However, each encountered unique challenges. The MTU team had to adjust tube lengths after forgetting to include connector joints in their calculations.

The Université Laval team had to adapt the structure perfectly to the needs of their vehicle. As the slides used came from another partner, the greatest difficulty encountered was installing them to the tube structure. These slides had to be attached using a fastening system that was not possible to use with the tubes. The students had to cut and bend certain pieces of metal and make new holes to secure them. The 3D design of the cart was created with SolidWorks software, using the parts library provided by the Flexpipe Creator.

Educational Experiences

Taking part in the Shell Eco Marathon was an enriching experience for both teams, enabling them to push back the boundaries of their engineering and prepare new innovations for future competitions. Flexpipe is proud to support these young talents and contribute to their success in the field of energy efficiency.

The teams faced a few technical challenges. The MTU team had to repair their engine after the starter gear broke loose, causing significant damage. Despite these obstacles, they showed impressive resilience and managed to record a fuel consumption of 670.2 MPG, ranking sixth (2024). While Université Laval took first place in the gasoline prototype rankings (2023). Congratulations to all!

In conclusion, thanks to Flexpipe's support, the MTU and Université de Laval teams were able to overcome complex technical challenges and demonstrate remarkable ingenuity, thus preparing themselves for a promising future in the field of automotive engineering.

A COAT RACK DESIGNED FOR AND BY THE CHILDREN OF THE LA-LE-LI CENTER

A COAT RACK DESIGNED FOR AND BY THE CHILDREN OF THE LA-LE-LI CENTER

Flexpipe is proud to have partnered with the Educational Help La-Le-Li Center in Farnham to host a coat rack building workshop. The center had expressed a need for storage for the coats, boots and lunch boxes of the young people who frequent the premises. We therefore imagined together the ideal coat rack for their needs and planned the workshop day.

In this picture, France Gagné, Mireille Belleau, the children of the La-Le-Li center, and the Flexpipe team members

The workshop took place on a pedagogical day that coincided perfectly with International Day of Education. 10 young people between 6 and 11 years old were able to participate in the construction of their coat rack. They were also able to proudly sign the top of the piece of furniture in turn to reinforce the feeling of accomplishment that inhabited them.

The activity was intended to be fun, imaginative and inclusive for all ages. Young people will have put their creativity, their dexterity... and their strength to the test!

The La-Le-Li Center is an educational support center for elementary-aged children in the Municipality of Farnham. Thanks to dedicated volunteers, children can benefit from personalized assistance adapted to their needs. Whether it's homework help, tutoring, or activities during pedagogical days. All interventions are dedicated to supporting the parent in his role as educator. It's a great local initiative that we want to support, because we believe we can help make learning possible in a fun and concrete way!

A DONATION OF PROTECTIVE PANELS TO ENABLE LE CHAÎNON TO PURSUE ITS MISSION

A DONATION OF PROTECTIVE PANELS TO ENABLE LE CHAÎNON TO PURSUE ITS MISSION

Le Chaînon has seen its reception capacity reduced to 50% due to the pandemic linked to Covid-19. A donation of divider panels made it possible to continue to welcome and support women in difficulty in a safe environment for all.

Le Chaînon is a Montreal-based organization that has been helping women in transition since 1932. In addition to its helpline and support services available at all times, it offers short and long-term accommodation to more than 500 women annually.

One of its most-used services is emergency accommodation, which houses 12 women every day. They spend the night in a secure dormitory, can eat supper and breakfast, and receive many services, such as healthcare and clothing care.

Unfortunately, with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, the shelter had to reduce its lodging capacity by almost 50%. In fact, due to the physical distancing measures decreed by Public Health, only seven women could sleep there.

Since the occupancy rate was 100% before the health crisis, the organization did not want to penalize those needing its services by accommodating fewer women.

Helping Le Chaînon pursue its mission
Le Chaînon’s management came up with the idea of installing protective panels. After doing some research, they learned that Flexpipe made sneeze guards to limit the spread of the coronavirus. Excited by this great project, we donated several panels to them and made the trip to Montreal to come and install them.

In the picture, Julia Sourbé, Patrice Mongeau, Richard Forgues, Katia Poulin and part of the Flexpipe team

Flexpipe sneeze guards are made with steel tubing and connectors that form the frame of the structure. Mika fabric, which helps block droplets, forms the wall and is attached to the frame with self-locking tie wraps.

There are several models, some of which are installed directly on the floor, and others on counters or furniture. Regardless of the model, assembly time is generally only 15 to 20 minutes per panel.

Panel installation
At Le Chaînon, we installed protective panels in the dormitory, as well as in the common dining room. In the first case, we installed partition walls between each of the 12 beds, starting at the height of the pillows.

Since the fabric used for the panels is transparent, the organization’s officials can easily see each of their residents and chat with them, while respecting the hygiene rules related to COVID-19. Solid panels, for example those made of plywood, would not have provided the same advantage.

In the dining room, we installed smaller sneeze guards the middle of each of the tables. Thus, the organization can serve as many meals as it wishes, without having to reduce its capacity. Additionally, women can sit across from each other to eat and chat, which helps to overcome isolation.

Mika fabrics not only improve communication, they also increase the lifespan of the panels. If the fabric ever got damaged, the organization would not need to get a new structure, it would only need to replace the damaged fabric, a process that only takes a few minutes. Tubes and connectors are strong and built to last for years.

Multi-purpose equipment
Once the pandemic is over, Le Chaînon can easily use the protective panels to meet new needs. Like the other Flexpipe products, these are fully modular and easily convert into a shelf or support for an electronic tablet or laptop.

In this picture, Sonia Côté, president and general manager at Le Chaînon, surrounded by Eric Collard and Sylvain Lejour of tinktube and Flexpipe.

We are very happy to have helped this wonderful community organization continue to operate during this time of uncertainty. Thanks to our sneeze guards and partition walls, Le Chaînon was able to install sneeze guard separator panels in the dormitory, in the cafeteria and in the Le Chaînon store.

160-kilometre Relay Race for the Brome-Missisquoi Child Community

160-kilometre Relay Race for the Brome-Missisquoi Child Community

Always looking for new challenges, it is with great motivation that some employees mobilized to support the children of Brome-Missisquoi at the Bromont Ultra 2019. See this 160-kilometre relay race recap.

The participants of the Flexpipe team had the common goal of making their loved ones aware of physical activity while giving back to a cause close to their hearts. It was both a personal and a group challenge, where surpassing oneself was in the spotlight. It was by running the distance of 160 kilometres in relay that these 10 participants surpassed themselves during the weekend of October 12-13th, 2019.

THE SUPPORTED CAUSE: MAIN DANS LA MAIN
The chosen cause affects each member of the team directly or indirectly, in addition to being a local organization. All team members unanimously chose to donate the funds raised to the Community social pediatrics Main dans la main of Brome-Missisquoi.

The role of this organization is to accompany and support children from 0 to 14 years old in situations of great vulnerability. Acting on toxic stresses and the causes of difficulties for children in the region through proximity and intensive and personalized support for children in their development.

In this photo, Dr. Sophie Giugovaz, family doctor (left) and Marie-Claude Lizotte, general manager of the pediatric center (right)
The Objectives
Each team registered for Bromont Ultra had to pay a minimum amount to the cause of their choice based on the number of participants and the distance to be covered. The sum of $750 was the minimum to be paid to the Main dans la main social pediatrics centre.

Nevertheless, the participants of the Flexpipe team set themselves the challenge of raising twice the amount requested, and they almost succeeded. A total of $1,435 was donated to the selected cause.

An additional challenge animated the SME during the month preceding the race. Employees had to bet on which runner they wanted to run the last 2 miles wearing a dinosaur costume. The runner with the largest amount of money in his pot would have to finish the race dressed as a tyrannosaurus.

This small activity served as an additional fundraiser and raised an additional $300 for the selected cause. Benjamin found himself at the top of this little friendly challenge, for a difference of barely $20!

The runners' children were even able to participate in the last 2 kilometers of the race and accompany the mascot.

Overview & testimonial
The start was given on October 12th at noon and the 160 kilometers were completed around 4:15 p.m. the next day. The race conditions were perfect; the temperature, the sun and the colours of autumn were there.

It is a memorable race year after year. An experience that allows you to live a great team trip, I loved it!

Yves Provost - Participant and father

In addition to being a unifying event and approaching team building, the runners came together to do some team training. This is the second consecutive year for the Flexpipe team to participate in the Bromont Ultra.

Runners each have a personal goal that they have set themselves, and are all very inspired by this exceptional event.

Benjamin Ricard - Leader participant and father
